Primary School Bus Services in Singapore: Find Your School's Operator

• •Each primary school appoints its own school bus operator and publishes the operator on the school's website.
• •Routes and fares are set by the operator and reviewed periodically, so they can change from year to year.
• •MOE does not publish a central fare list, and the fare depends on your address, route and bus size. Where a school publishes its own fare table we show it on that school's page, but confirm the figure for your exact address with the operator.
• •Schools appoint operators by open tender. Operators bid a "Not-To-Exceed" maximum fare for each distance band, and the fare a family actually pays is agreed with the operator under that ceiling, according to MOE.

Paying, cancelling and what the operator owes you

• •You pay for nine months, not twelve. Under MOE's standard contract fares are collected in January to May and July to October. No fare is payable for June, November or December, and the bus still runs on school days in those months. Budget the monthly figure nine times, not twelve.
• •Two months' written notice to stop. A parent may end the service at any time on at least two months' notice in writing, under the same standard contract. Operators commonly ask for two months' fees instead of notice, so put it in writing early.
• •The contract is between you and the operator, not between you and the school. Submitting the form is a request, and the operator can decline it or route your child differently.
• •The 4km line. Since 2023 operators have been contractually required to carry pupils living within 4km of the school, down from 6km, according to MOE. Beyond 4km the operator is not obliged to serve you, and nor is it obliged to do after-school drop-offs for activities ending after 4pm. Both are then a matter of asking.
• •What is promised is an arrival time, not a pickup time. School letters state the latest time the bus will reach school and the latest it leaves after dismissal. When it reaches your block depends on where you fall in the route order, and that is not in the contract.
• •Complaints about a driver or attendant go to the school office, not the operator. Schools collect that feedback and use it when deciding whether to renew the operator.

Safety rules set by LTA

• •Three children may share a two-adult bench. LTA allows three children up to 12 years old on a double seat, and one child on a single seat. Where the seat has belts, the number of children may not exceed the number of belts.
• •Your child will not be standing. LTA prohibits school children under 18 from standing on a bus ferrying them to or from school or a school activity.
• •A bus attendant is not required on most primary school buses. LTA requires one only on buses serving childcare centres and kindergartens, or buses authorised to carry more than 30 children. A typical small school bus lawfully runs with the driver alone. Parents often expect otherwise, so ask rather than assume.
• •Drivers hold a Bus Driver's Vocational Licence and attendants a Bus Attendant's Vocational Licence, both issued by LTA. Breaching the school bus safety requirements carries a fine of up to $2,000 or up to six months' jail.
• •The flashing "Children Crossing" sign is mandatory equipment at the rear, and the hazard lights must come on automatically whenever the door opens while children are aboard.

Why a smaller bus can cost more

Small buses of 15 seats and under usually price higher per child, not lower. Schools' own bus notes give the reason: seat belts are fitted, seating is one child per seat, pickup points are easier to reach and the journey is shorter. If a fare table looks upside down, that is usually why. On a two-way trip whose legs are unequal, the standard contract prices the shorter leg.

• •From January 2026 MOE's Financial Assistance Scheme covers 70% of the monthly school bus fare for a primary pupil, raised from 65%, according to MOE. On a $160 fare that is about $48 out of pocket.
• •If your child takes public transport instead, the subsidy is $21 a month, up to $252 a year. MOE pays one mode only, so the form asks you to pick bus or public transport.
• •The income ceiling from January 2026 is a gross household income of $4,000 a month or less, or $1,000 per person. Both were raised for 2026. FAS covers Singapore citizens in Government and Government-aided schools.
• •It is not backdated. The bus subsidy starts from the month your FAS takes effect, and MOE does not reimburse fares paid before that. Apply before the school year rather than after the first bill.
• •Apply online through MOE, or ask the school office for the form. One form covers siblings across different Government and Government-aided schools. From the 2026 cycle most families no longer need to submit income documents, because MOE checks means automatically.
• •If FAS is not enough, or you do not qualify, ask the school about its own assistance. Schools decide those case by case, and MOE points parents there.

The alternative to the bus is a School Smart Card concession pass. The monthly pass is $24 for buses, $21 for trains, or $39 for both, with a one-time $3.10 card fee. For a child whose school is a short ride away that is well under most bus fares, though it means an adult travelling with a six-year-old.
